One of the most important questions you can ask yourself at the start of a new year is this: Are you working for money, or is your money working for you? If you’ve never really stopped to think about it, now is the perfect time. Because 2026 offers the chance for a clean financial slate, and the possibility of finally getting on the path to financial freedom.
We all want to feel safe, secure, and free when it comes to money. Yet for many of us, money is a source of worry. It can keep us stuck in jobs we don’t love, trapped in cycles of debt, or simply living month to month without any real plan. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Once you understand how to achieve financial freedom, you can make small, smart choices that lead to long-term peace and abundance.
What Does Financial Freedom Really Mean?
For me, it means choice. The freedom to work because you want to, not because you have to. The ability to take time off when needed, to say yes to opportunities, or even to walk away from situations that don’t serve you. It means being in control of your time and your life.
One of my clients told me she realized she had been working for money her entire life. But once she learned how to achieve financial freedom, she began making completely different decisions. She cut expenses she didn’t value, started investing wisely, and paid off debt with joy instead of dread. Two years later, she had enough saved to take a six-month sabbatical. That’s freedom.
The First Step to Achieving Financial Freedom
Before anything else, you need to get clear on where your money is actually going. Most people don’t track their spending closely. They have a general idea, but the details remain fuzzy. That vagueness keeps you stuck.
Spend a week writing down everything you spend. No judgment. Just notice. You might be surprised how much money flows toward things that don’t truly make you happy. This is the beginning of awareness, and awareness is always the first step to change.
Now, I don’t track my money in that much detail ongoingly; I simply spend everything on one credit card and then pay that off each month. If I overspend, I cut back on something else. If you are on a tighter budget, you may need to track more closely. And if you can’t pay off your card each month in full, you need to take immediate action.
Make Money Decisions That Align with Your Values
Once you’ve reviewed where your money goes, ask yourself a few honest questions. Does this spending reflect what I care about most? Does it support my future goals? And does it bring real joy?
If you’re spending on things out of habit or obligation, it’s time to shift. Start asking with every purchase: Is this helping me achieve financial freedom? Or is it keeping me from it?
Working For Money: The Mindset Shift That Changes Everything
When I started my journey to financial freedom, I had to change one deeply ingrained belief: that you have to work hard for money. Yes, effort is important. But if money only comes from trading hours for pay, you’ll always be limited.
The key to achieving financial freedom lies in learning how to make your money work for you. That means building assets, not just earning income. Assets could include investments, property, or even a side business. Anything that grows in value or generates passive income while you sleep.
As Nick Maggiulli, author of The Wealth Ladder: Proven Strategies for Every Step of Your Financial Life, says, “If you have difficulty spending according to your Wealth Level, then the most expensive thing that you own is your ego.” This struck me deeply. Because real financial freedom isn’t about appearances. It’s about knowing what matters, letting go of ego-driven spending, and investing in your future.

Let Go of the “All or Nothing” Thinking
One of the biggest mistakes I see people make is waiting until they can do everything perfectly. You don’t need to make a huge leap to get started. In fact, you can begin today with just one small action. Open a savings account if you don’t have one. Set up an automatic transfer. Read one good book on investing or take a course. (My FIRE course is a great overview on how to get on the path to financial independence.)
Each small choice builds momentum. The moment you commit to learning how to achieve financial freedom, everything begins to shift.
The Real Gift of Financial Freedom
Money isn’t just about numbers. It’s about energy and peace of mind. When your finances are in order, you sleep better. You feel more confident. You make decisions from a place of strength instead of fear.
And perhaps most importantly, you show up in your relationships, your work, and your life with a whole new level of presence. You’re not distracted by worry or scarcity. You’re free to live fully.
