How to Stay Mindful and Calm in Challenging Times

I currently find myself in the midst of what I can only describe as challenging times. After 18 years in our beloved family home, we’re downsizing. This monumental task comes as our oldest daughter is preparing to leave for university. And, to add another layer, I’ve been navigating life on crutches for the past year, with hip surgery coming up soon. While my struggles pale in comparison to the immense challenges some of my good friends are facing – one going through a divorce, another battling cancer – they are real and they are not easy to navigate.

If you’re facing challenging times of your own, what are some things you can do to help you move through with as much ease and grace as possible? I’m using the following strategies, and they may help you as well.

Creating a Calm Environment

With the house sale approaching, I’ve come to appreciate the profound influence our environment holds over our state of mind. Preparing our home for viewings prompted a massive decluttering mission. Among the many relics collected over the years, I confronted an astonishing flock of decorative chickens in the kitchen – 23 of them! I started with a single chicken but then was gradually gifted more and more chickens over the years. (The law of attraction at work as like attracts like.) Whittling them down to a modest five not only improved the aesthetics but also lightened the cleaning load.

Clearing my desk of clutter was a small yet significant change. Now, stepping into my office feels like a breath of fresh air. If the thought of decluttering feels overwhelming, enlisting the help of a friend can be a game-changer. One such friend with a love of interior design gave me a list of staging suggestions, and I’ve been working through them. Even a simple switch of curtains in the front hall, from bright yellow to serene white, made a noticeable difference.

Taking just 15 minutes to tidy up and declutter can work wonders when stress levels are high. I’ve also introduced a touch of nature into our home, adding new houseplants and consigning the sad old ones to a new life in the compost heap. The presence of greenery adds a calming element to the space, making it feel more harmonious.

To further calm the atmosphere, I’m playing soothing music now in the background. It’s remarkable how simply adding music instantly creates a serene environment.

Establishing Mindful Practices

Cultivating a mindful mindset has become my anchor in the midst of change. One thing that helps me when I’m feeling stressed is to engage in deep belly breaths. Inhaling slowly for a count of five, holding for another five, and exhaling just as slowly, has an immediate calming effect. It’s a small practice, but it lays the foundation for a more centered state of being.

Keeping a journal has been very helpful to me in this journey. It gives me a place to observe and acknowledge my emotions without judgment. Journaling helps me create a space for reflection and gain a deeper understanding of the feelings that surface during these challenging times. This simple act of introspection has helped provide me with clarity amid the chaos.

Another mantra that has become my beacon is the phrase, “This too shall pass.” Reminding myself that this moment is only temporary helps to bring a sense of perspective. It’s a gentle nudge to hold onto hope, knowing that brighter days lie ahead.

Navigating Challenges with Resilience

In the face of these substantial changes, resilience has emerged as a steadfast companion. Downsizing and preparing to leave a place that holds so many memories can be emotionally overwhelming. Yet, I’ve learned to embrace the process, allowing acceptance to pave the way for growth. It’s a reminder that adapting to change is not a sign of weakness, but a testament to our ability to evolve.

Being on crutches for a year and facing an upcoming hip surgery has brought its own set of trials. The physical limitations can be frustrating, but they’ve also become a catalyst for innovation. I’ve discovered new ways of accomplishing tasks and tapped into an inner strength I didn’t know I possessed. I’ve learned the importance of seeking support, from loved ones, my medical team, or others who are facing similar challenges.

Staying Focused on What Matters

I’ll be honest, staying focused lately has been a challenge. It’s easy to feel overwhelmed by the sheer volume of tasks and decisions that come with selling a home. In those moments of overwhelm, I use the technique of prioritization. Breaking down the process into manageable steps allows me to tackle one task at a time. I’m taking pleasure in small wins, and am so pleased at how lovely the bathroom looks with the fresh white paint and new fluffy bath towels.

Time management techniques have also helped me maintain focus. Setting specific time blocks for different tasks creates a sense of structure and prevents the day from slipping away in a blur of to-dos. This practice not only enhances productivity but also provides a sense of accomplishment. You might try the Pomodoro Technique of focusing on a challenging task for just twenty minutes and then taking a break. Knowing I only have to do something for twenty minutes makes it easier to start. Set a timer and give yourself permission to stop when the time is up.

As I move through these challenging times, I’m reminded that even in the middle of chaos there are opportunities for growth and transformation. Through mindfulness, resilience, and focus, I’ve found a sense of calm and even some peace. Even in the face of significant change, we can navigate with grace and emerge stronger on the other side. So, as I prepare for this new chapter in my life, I’m carrying with me the lessons I’ve learned and the strength I’ve gained. I know that I have the tools and support I need to face whatever comes my way.
