Beyond Resolutions: A Life Coach’s Approach to Goal Setting

Share this on:

Welcome to a brand new year! It’s an opportunity for a fresh start by crafting your resolutions to design and create the life you truly desire.

As a life coach, my goal is to guide you beyond traditional and often ineffective New Year’s resolutions. Instead, we’ll focus on powerful goal-setting techniques (such as leveraging the law of attraction) that can transform your aspirations into reality.

So, let’s get’s started on the journey to make 2024 your most brilliant year yet.

The Pitfall of Resolutions

While New Year’s resolutions are a common tradition, statistics show that a significant number of people abandon them within the first few weeks. The reason behind this is often the lack of a structured approach and sustainable mindset, in addition to making some very common goal-setting mistakes. Instead of setting resolutions that may feel restrictive, why not try a more holistic life coaching approach to crafting powerful goals?

Make a Vision Board or a Scrapbook of Your Ideal Future Life

One practical and engaging method to attract your goals is by creating a vision board. Think of it as a visual representation of your aspirations, dreams, and the life you envision for yourself in the coming year. Gather magazines, images, and quotes that resonate with you. Whether it’s a career milestone, a dream vacation, or a healthier lifestyle, let your vision board serve as a daily reminder of what you’re working towards.

This year is a year of major transition for me as I move and downsize into a new home so I’m making a scrapbook of my future life. Most people make scrapbooks of their past, saving special memories or photos. I like to scrapbook my future, cutting out images from magazines of my future life and pasting them into a physical book. I then write little notes in the margins explaining the future I want as if it has already come true and I’m now recording it as a done deal.

This is a great way of activating the law of attraction because the brain will focus on the images of what you desire and you are telling the brain that this is already true for you.

For example, if I want to take my girls on a holiday in Greece this year, I’ll cut out an image of the lovely hotel or beach that looks like a place I’d like to go and then paste it into the scrapbook. Then jot down, “We stayed in a beautiful hotel overlooking the sea and ate freshly caught seafood every evening while the most amazing harpist played in the background.” Then a picture of the pool or the sea with the note, “The water was so warm we swam in the sea every day for an hour and the water was so clear we could see the little fish.” Include as many details as you can, including sounds, sights, tastes, temperature, etc.

Practical Steps

Reflect on Your Desires: Take some time to identify your key resolutions for the year. What do you want to achieve in your personal and professional life?

Collect Visuals: Scour magazines, print images from the internet or use personal photos that symbolize your goals.

Arrange and Affirm: Place your visuals on a board in an organized manner. Add affirmations that resonate with your objectives.

Display Strategically: Put your vision board in a prominent place where you’ll see it daily, reinforcing your commitment to your goals.

Goal-Setting Strategies for Success

Beyond vision boards, effective goal setting involves specific strategies to keep you on track. Let’s delve into some practical steps you can implement to set and achieve your goals and resolutions this year.

1. Instead of SMART Goals, Set Holistic, Value-Based Goals

You’ve no doubt heard about setting SMART criteria for goal setting: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. This approach can add clarity and structure to your goals. However, I’ve never found the time element to work for me. It seems that the universe works on its own schedule. Instead of SMART goals, how about setting goals that are based on your core values?

For example, one of my top values is travel and adventure. Every year I make sure to include a trip to someplace new I’d like to see. The great thing about setting value-based goals is that it is hard to fail. Why? Because we want to live our values –they are intrinsically motivating. So forget about berating yourself with boring “should” goals. Put some really fun, exciting goals in place instead.

2. Break It Down

Divide your goals into smaller, manageable tasks. This makes your objectives less overwhelming and also allows you to celebrate small victories along the way. The more you celebrate small wins, the more likely you are to achieve the results you desire.

3. Prioritize and Focus

While it’s tempting to set multiple goals for the new year, prioritizing is key. Focus on a few significant objectives to avoid spreading yourself too thin. For example, I recommend setting a maximum of one big goal and three projects at a time. Then, as you complete a project, you can add a new project to your list.

4. Accountability Partners

Share your goals with a friend, family member, a mentor, or an accredited life coach who can provide support and hold you accountable. Having someone to share your journey with makes the process more enjoyable and effective.

Embracing Positivity and Mindset Shifts

A life coach’s approach extends beyond mere goal setting. It involves cultivating a positive mindset and adopting daily habits that align with your aspirations.

1. Gratitude Journaling

Start or end your day by jotting down things you’re grateful for. This gratitude practice shifts your focus to the positive aspects of life, increasing the likelihood you will attract what you want.

2. Visualization Techniques

Close your eyes and vividly imagine yourself achieving your goals. Visualization enhances belief and creates a mental blueprint for success. You could look through or add more images to your Future Life Scrapbook to reinforce what you want. This reminds your brain of what you want to achieve. I also like Shatki Gawain’s classic primer on visualization techniques, Creative Visualization.

3. Affirmations

Craft positive affirmations related to your goals and resolutions. Repeat them daily to reinforce a positive mindset and overcome self-doubt.

Nurturing Well-being Along the Way

As you work towards your goals, it’s vital to prioritize your well-being. Here are some practical tips to ensure a balanced and fulfilling journey:

1. Self-Care Rituals

Incorporate self-care activities into your routine. Whether it’s reading a book, practicing mindfulness, or going for a walk, nurturing your well-being is essential for sustained success.

One commonly neglected, but crucial self-care resolution for the new year is establishing healthy boundaries. Many people overlook the importance of setting clear boundaries in various aspects of their lives, including work, relationships, and personal time.

Here are some examples of establishing healthy boundaries for your self-care goal:

Work-Life Balance: Strive to create a clear separation between work and personal time. Set specific work hours, avoid checking emails outside those hours, and make time for activities that bring you joy and relaxation.

Saying “No” Without Guilt: Learn to say no when you need to, without feeling guilty. Setting boundaries on your time and energy is essential for maintaining your well-being and preventing burnout.

Digital Detox: Allocate specific times for using technology, and consider implementing a digital detox routine. Limiting screen time can have positive effects on mental health and overall well-being.

Prioritizing Mental Health: Make mental health a priority by setting boundaries around activities that may negatively impact your well-being. This might include limiting exposure to stressors, seeking support when needed, and practicing mindfulness or meditation.

Personal Space and Time: Carve out personal space and time for yourself. Whether it’s a few minutes of quiet reflection, a hobby you enjoy, or simply downtime, having moments for self-reflection and relaxation is vital.

Establishing healthy boundaries is a foundational self-care goal that can positively impact various aspects of your life. It empowers you to create a balanced, fulfilling, and sustainable lifestyle while safeguarding your mental and emotional well-being.

2. Learn and Adapt

Be open to learning and adapting. Life is dynamic, and flexibility is a key element of success. Embrace changes and adjust your goals as needed.

3. Celebrate Milestones

Acknowledge and celebrate your achievements, both big and small, along the way. This not only boosts your morale but also reinforces a positive association with your goals, creating natural momentum for future progress.

Closing Thoughts

As you step into the new year, you can transcend the limitations of traditional resolutions. By embracing a life coaching approach, you have the power to set engaging and naturally motivating goals, nurture a positive mindset, and craft a roadmap to your desired future.

Remember, it’s not just about the destination but the journey you embark on to get there. Here’s to making this year one of growth, achievement, and deep personal fulfillment with plenty of joy, fun, and happiness tossed in for good measure!
