47: Surround Yourself with Inspiring People

Surround yourself with people of equal or greater ability, aptitude, and experience. Tap into new talent, and experience greater growth. Not only will you benefit, but those around you will also prosper. –Tavis Smiley

When we surround ourselves with people who are positive and optimistic, people who are doing big and exciting things in life, then it is easier to do the same. It makes a difference who your friends are. Sometimes we have to let old friends fade into the background if they bring us down or discourage us. Make sure all your friends make you feel good about yourself. This doesn’t mean you can’t help a friend through a tough time, but you need to make sure that you are getting plenty of positive contact as well. If you are starting a business, get a great business mentor or coach who can advise and inspire you. If you are learning about money, talk to your more fiscally successful friends and see if they can give you advice. They might be able to recommend a good financial planner, a good accountant, etc.

Expand your circle of friends by joining relevant groups, associations or clubs. Early on in his career, Donald Trump joined one of the most expensive and exclusive clubs in New York City. He really couldn’t afford to join, but he considered it an investment in his future business and knew that it was where he would make the contacts that would make him successful.

Homework:
1. Make a list of your friends and consider whether they add energy to your life or drain your energy. Do you feel more alive and inspired after being around them or are they brining you down? Start spending more time with the friends who make you feel good.

2. Make a list of clubs, associations, or organizations where you might meet like-minded people. If you are an entrepreneur, join a group of entrepreneurs. If you are an avid knitter, join a knitting club. You’ll expand your circle of contacts by joining a group, that will in turn, inspire you to do or try new things.

3. Join a new club or association that inspires you.
