The goal: Simplify Your Stuff. Play a game this week. Imagine that you are moving to another country and can only take 100 things with you to your new home. Make a list of the 100 things that are truly your most favorite, cherished or useful possessions. You may be surprised to find that things you once thought magnificent no longer hold your interest.
This makes getting rid of the excess easier. The less we own, the less we have to maintain and the freer you will feel. I’m not suggesting you should only have 100 things total, but making a list is a good starting point and it will make it easier for you let go of the things that aren’t in your top 100. (The real hard-core minimalists only have 100 things, but they count multiples of things like underwear or socks or cutlery as one thing so even they cheat a bit!)
This week grab a clipboard and take a leisurely tour of your home, listing your 100 favorite things (yes, even your favorite clothes like that fabulous black suit or those red suede pumps). If you feel inclined to part with something that isn’t on your top 100 list, go right ahead! The point of this exercise is to ensure that everything occupying space in your life is sufficiently worthy given you have to house it and maintain it. If you look at something and find it is no longer beautiful or useful to you, then out it goes, either to simply make space in your life or to attract something new and better. Living your ideal life is about upgrading, making sure that everything in your life is what you truly want. Now is the time to let things go that aren’t up to your new, higher standards.
10 minute option: Set the timer and jot down as many of your favorite things as you can in ten minutes.
Enjoy!
