Planting Daffodils

On a lovely sunny mid-October day I spent hours planting 150 daffodil bulbs. I never thought I’d like gardening much, having been an uptown gal in NYC, but I love it. There is something incredibly grounding about planting something. It puts a body back in touch with nature and the earth. It is too easy in our modern world to disconnect from the source of life. After a day of planting bulbs I felt a deep joy and peacefulness that all was well in the world.

It is also wonderful to have something to look forward to. I look forward to that grey day in February when I’ll be greeted by hundreds of cheery yellow flowers waving in the wind. One of my girlfriends says she doesn’t like surprises, not because she doesn’t like being surprised, but because she loves the anticipation. She likes knowing that she is going on vacation well in advance so she can enjoy thinking and planning and savouring the excitement building up to it. We have to create things in our lives to look forward to. Life doesn’t always just hand them over.

Take the time to plan a special weekend away, a holiday abroad, a dinner party or event. Plant the daffodils in your life.

All the best,
Talane
